ECI Dismisses Rahul Gandhi’s Vote Theft Allegations as Baseless and Inaccurate

Rahul Gandhi recently alleged that over 6,000 voters, mainly Congress supporters, were deliberately deleted in Karnataka’s Aland assembly constituency using software tools. In response, the Election Commission of India (ECI) firmly rejected these claims, calling them “incorrect” and “baseless.” The Commission clarified that no voter can be removed from the rolls without due process, which includes notifying the voter and offering a hearing. ECI stated that Gandhi’s comments reflect a misunderstanding of the legal and procedural safeguards around voter deletions.

Rahul Gandhi’s Allegations and ECI’s Rebuttal

The ECI explained that in 2023, it had detected suspicious deletion requests from Aland and promptly acted. An FIR was filed after internal investigation, and the matter was handed to the police. The Commission emphasized that no actual manipulation of the voter rolls occurred. It also pointed out that in the past two elections, the constituency saw different outcomes—BJP won in 2018 and Congress in 2023—showing that no political party gained from these attempts.

Karnataka’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) supported the ECI’s stance, offering detailed insights into the case. The CEO stated that 6,018 Form 7 applications were received online in December 2022 via NVSP, VHA, and GARUDA platforms. Due to the unusually high volume, all applications were thoroughly investigated. Officials suspected foul play and ensured each form underwent detailed verification before approval or rejection, in line with ECI guidelines. The case demonstrates how election authorities use both digital tools and manual checks to safeguard the process.

ECI: Investigation Findings and Appeal for Responsible Discourse

Officials found only 24 of the 6,018 applications to be genuine after the inquiry. They rejected the remaining 5,994 applications immediately without deleting any names from the electoral rolls. The Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) filed an FIR in February 2023 based on the inquiry’s findings. In September 2023, the CEO handed over all available information to the police, following ECI’s instructions. These actions demonstrate the system’s commitment to taking legal steps against any electoral malpractice.

The ECI and Karnataka CEO urged political leaders to act responsibly and avoid spreading misinformation about the election process. They reiterated that India’s voter roll system uses strict safeguards to prevent fraud and unauthorized deletions. The ECI confirmed that officials blocked all deletion attempts in Aland before any damage could occur. They acknowledged the importance of monitoring digital platforms but assured voters that ongoing investigations and transparency efforts continue to protect their rights and uphold democratic integrity.
