On Friday, the Congress party pledged to eliminate the “Agnipath” policy and reinstate the previous armed forces recruitment scheme to reach their full sanctioned strength. They also committed to promptly restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir as part of their manifesto released ahead of the national polls scheduled between April and June. The manifesto, centered on five pillars and 25 guarantees, outlines the party’s key promises and priorities.

The party emphasized that the upcoming elections offer a chance to fundamentally alter the governance approach established during the last decade of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rule.

The Congress party has committed to conducting a nationwide socio-economic and caste census, aligning with the insistence of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Gandhi has consistently advocated for this census to gain a better understanding of India’s demographics and to ensure a fair distribution of power and wealth. In states like Madhya Pradesh, the Congress has promised to conduct a caste census if the party is re-elected, while attributing the lack of attention to marginalized castes to the ruling BJP.

Furthermore, the Congress has guaranteed a constitutional amendment to lift the 50% cap on reservations for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes. It has pledged to implement a 10% quota in jobs and educational institutions for Economically Weaker Sections across all castes and communities, without any discrimination. Additionally, the party has promised to adopt the Rajasthan model of providing cashless insurance of up to ₹25 lakh for universal healthcare. Another assurance is the enactment of a new Right to Apprenticeship Act, which would offer a one-year apprenticeship to every diploma holder or graduate below the age of 25.
