The Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra has approved 276 seats for the upcoming Assembly polls. However, there are 12 seats where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Eknath Shinde faction of Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar faction of NCP are each holding firm on their claims.
Pre-Meeting Tensions
The situation was more serious before Thursday. When a late-night meeting took place at Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s residence in Delhi. Sources indicate that there were around 37 contentious seats prior to the meeting. However, Shah managed to resolve 25 of those seats on Thursday, pleasing all the Mahayuti allies, according to informed sources.
However, there are still 12 seats that remain unresolved for the Mahayuti.
Sources suggest that Ajit Pawar’s NCP and the BJP are in conflict over the seats of Ashti. Badgao Sheri, and Nasgao. Meanwhile, the BJP and the Shinde faction of Shiv Sena are contending for seats. Such as Baisar, Palghar, Nalasopara, and Vasai.
Rebellion Risks Rise Over 12 Seats as BJP Considers Last-Minute Allocations
Sources indicate that the likelihood of rebellion over these 12 seats is increasing. During Thursday’s meeting, the option of announcing the party allocations for these seats just before the nomination deadline was discussed. This approach aims to reduce the public spectacle of potential rebellions and prevent the opposition from exploiting the situation for political gain.
Earlier, another round of discussions occurred in Delhi with Home Minister Amit Shah, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and Deputy Chief Ministers Ajit Pawar and Devendra Fadnavis in attendance. Sources revealed that they finalized the main seat-sharing agreement, with the BJP potentially contesting 156 seats in Maharashtra this time.
Sources indicate that the Eknath Shinde faction of the Shiv Sena is expected to contest 78 seats, while Ajit Pawar’s faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) may aim for 54 seats.
The BJP has recently issued its second list for the Maharashtra assembly elections, naming 121 candidates so far. Meanwhile, the Ajit Pawar-led NCP has released its third list with 49 candidates, and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction has announced 65 candidates to date. In total, the BJP-led Mahayuti has fielded candidates for 235 seats. However, they are not only behind the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, which has nominated candidates for 259 seats, but also significantly short of the 288 total seats in the Maharashtra Assembly.
