The Bharatiya Janata Party BJP has chosen Pochishe Boishakh to mark what it calls a new beginning in West Bengal. The move carries strong cultural significance, as the day celebrates Rabindranath Tagore’s birth anniversary, widely known as Rabindra Jayanti. By aligning the oath-taking ceremony with this occasion, the party aims to connect with Bengal’s deep-rooted traditions and cultural identity.

BJP Aligns Swearing-In with Tagore Jayanti
The Bharatiya Janata Party announced that it will hold the new government’s swearing-in ceremony in Kolkata on May 9. Party leaders described the decision as symbolic and strategic, aiming to connect with Bengali sentiments. They framed the timing as an effort to blend political change with cultural pride. Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hinted at this plan during his Barrackpore rally and expressed confidence about returning after the results to attend the ceremony. After the results, he again invoked Rabindranath Tagore while addressing party workers, emphasizing a vision for Bengal inspired by the poet’s ideals of freedom and dignity.
Meanwhile, election officials will complete the formal process by handing over the official notification to state authorities. The Governor will then follow constitutional procedures, seek the resignation of the outgoing Chief Minister, and ensure continuity through a caretaker arrangement until the new government assumes office. Rabindra Jayanti remains one of the most important cultural observances in West Bengal, and people celebrate it through music, literature, and public events. As the BJP prepares to form the government, the planned oath-taking on this day will stand out as both a political milestone and a culturally symbolic event in the state.
