Turkey bans social media for under-15s

Turkey passed a law banning children under 15 from creating social media accounts, according to Turkish broadcaster NTV reports.

Tightens Safety Rules

The legislation also requires digital platforms to implement strict age-verification systems to ensure compliance. The move reflects a broader global trend to reduce the negative impact of excessive internet and social media use on young people. Countries like Australia have already taken similar steps, introducing landmark restrictions that limit social media access to users aged 16 and above.

The ruling party of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan introduced the law, and he is expected to sign it soon. Once approved, the government will enforce it six months after publishing it in the official gazette. Along with age restrictions, the law places greater responsibility on social media companies. It requires platforms to respond quickly to harmful or dangerous content.

Global push to restrict social media for youth, Turkey joins

Beyond Turkey, countries around the world are accelerating efforts to regulate children’s access to social media. France has been leading the charge in Europe, working closely with partners such as Denmark, Greece, and Spain. A widely debated proposal to ban social media for under-15s is advancing in the French parliament, reflecting growing concerns about online impact. The movement gained significant momentum after Australia, in December, became the first country to officially prohibit individuals under the age of 16 from using major social media platforms.

Following this trend, Greece has also announced plans to implement a similar ban for users under 15. Meanwhile, the European Union is taking a more coordinated approach. The EU has formed an expert group to develop recommendations for member states, aiming to create a unified framework protecting minors.
