In Rajasthan’s Kota, a hub for future engineers and doctors, two boys died by suicide within four hours on Sunday.
Anand Kumar, the mathematician who established the Super 30 coaching center, expressed his distress over two suicides that occurred in Kota, Rajasthan, a renowned hub for aspiring engineers and doctors in India. On a platform like X (formerly Twitter), Kumar urged coaching centers to regard their students as if they were their own children and provide equal attention to all. He also advised students not to judge their abilities based on a single test. This year, Kota has witnessed an unprecedented number of nearly twenty student suicides.
“I’m deeply disturbed by the tragic suicides of two youngsters in Kota within a span of four hours. I urge coaching providers not to prioritize profit over education. Let’s care for these students as our own,” expressed Mr. Kumar on social media.
“And I would like to explain to the students that any one test cannot define your talent. There is not one but many ways to be successful in life. At the same time, parents should not expect their children to fulfill their unfulfilled dreams,” he added.
A 17-year-old named Avishkar Shubhangi, hailing from Maharashtra, was getting ready for the NEET medical entrance exam, tragically becoming one of the deceased students.
The second boy named Adarsh Raj was from Bihar. Both died in two separate incidents on August 27.
While Avishkar jumped from the sixth floor of his coaching institute’s building, Adarsh hanged himself at his rented apartment.
In 2023, there have already been 23 suicides, compared to 15 in 2022. December 2022 was the deadliest month, with three suicides in a single day.
Data shows that the number of suicides has increased by 60 per cent since the COVID-19 pandemic.
