High Suicide Rate among Competitive Exam Aspirants in Kota

Last year, 27 students preparing for various competitive examinations died by suicide in the district.

Arvind Bharadwaj, the station house officer (SHO) of Kunhadi, reported that they found the student, a resident of Haryana’s Rohtak, hanging from the ceiling fan in his hostel room on Sunday.

“The incident came to light when he failed to respond to calls and did not open his door until the evening, prompting his parents to alert the warden,” stated the SHO. The warden then notified the police and attempted to check on the student, but found the room locked from the inside. Despite repeated knocks, there was no response, leading the police to break open the door and find the student hanging from the ceiling fan, Bharadwaj explained.

Investigation into Student’s Death in Kota Hostel

The police mentioned that they didn’t find a suicide note at the scene and informed the student’s parents about his passing. The student had been attending a coaching center in Kota for over a year and had moved to the hostel in July last year.

“The body has been sent for autopsy, and an FSL team has been summoned. We are investigating whether there were any changes in behavior,” the SHO stated.

“We are also looking into why the hostel did not install spring-loaded fans as per the district administration’s guidelines,” he further commented.

Bharadwaj mentioned that an investigation into the hostel authority’s actions would begin once the police submit a report on the guideline violation. He added that once the police submit a report to the district collector regarding the violation of guidelines, they will initiate an inquiry against the hostel authority.
