Jharkhand to Cancel JPSC Exam, but Students Refuse to Budge on CBI Probe

Jharkhand student leaders rejected government concessions and demanded a CBI probe into recruitment examination irregularities. Talks between government and protesting JPSC-JSSC aspirants failed to resolve major disagreements during Sunday’s meeting.

Student leaders announced a massive march toward the Jharkhand Assembly on August 10, expecting thousands. They said protesters would continue their agitation until officials publicly announced a CBI investigation formally. The government had cancelled the 14th JPSC examination after students raised allegations of serious irregularities. Officials also ordered investigations and promised reforms to address concerns surrounding future examinations and appointments. However, students said these measures failed to address their demand for an independent CBI investigation.

Students Reject Government Proposal, Maintain Demand for CBI Probe

They demanded cancellation of the CGL examination, which the government refused to accept during negotiations. Minister Sudivya Kumar Sonu said courts had supervised the CGL examination and prevented unilateral cancellation. He explained that authorities had already declared results, while successful candidates had joined government service. The government instead proposed a monitoring committee led by a retired judge to supervise investigations. Student representatives rejected that proposal because they considered it insufficient to address alleged examination irregularities.

They argued that a CBI investigation could establish accountability and restore confidence among protesting aspirants. The government maintained that it had addressed most concerns after conducting three days of negotiations. Sonu said officials had accepted nearly 98 percent of the issues raised during negotiations officially. He identified CGL cancellation and the CBI investigation as the main unresolved demands of students. The government announced separate investigations into irregularities linked to the 14th JPSC examination and backlog recruitments. CID would investigate criminal allegations, while authorities would request an Enforcement Directorate probe into suspected financial transactions. Officials also proposed a fast-track court and promised chargesheets against accused persons within ninety days. For recruitment reforms, the government plans a committee involving IIT-ISM, IIM Ranchi and XLRI.
