Byju Raveendran Jailed by Singapore Court for Contempt

Byju Raveendran, founder of Byju’s, received a six-month jail sentence from a Singapore court after authorities found him guilty of contempt for failing to follow multiple court orders related to his assets.

The court directed Raveendran to surrender to authorities, pay legal expenses worth S$90,000, and submit ownership documents connected to Beeaar Investco Pte, a company holding shares in a related entity.

The ruling adds to the entrepreneur’s growing legal and financial troubles across several countries. Raveendran is already facing disputes with lenders in the United States over a defaulted $1.2 billion loan. Earlier, a US court also held him in contempt and imposed daily penalties for failing to comply with disclosure orders.

Despite the ruling, Raveendran claimed that settlement talks with lenders and investors were nearing completion. He accused some parties of creating a misleading narrative around him and said stakeholders had acknowledged that neither he nor other founders committed wrongdoing.

Raveendran founded Think & Learn Pvt Ltd in 2011 with his wife, Divya Gokulnath, after gaining popularity as a mathematics coach for competitive exams. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Byju’s became one of the world’s fastest-growing edtech companies and reached a peak valuation of nearly $22 billion in 2022.

However, the company later faced allegations related to governance issues, delayed financial reporting, rising losses, and aggressive expansion. In 2023, India’s Enforcement Directorate searched properties linked to Byju’s over alleged foreign exchange law violations.

The crisis deepened after Byju’s failed to repay its US term loan, triggering legal action, shareholder disputes, board resignations, layoffs, and insolvency proceedings. The company’s valuation eventually collapsed, with Raveendran later admitting that its value had effectively dropped to zero.
