Operation Amistad: India Rushes Humanitarian Aid to Earthquake-Stricken Venezuela

India has launched Operation Amistad, a major humanitarian relief mission, to support Venezuela after two powerful earthquakes struck the South American nation within a minute of each other on Wednesday. The twin earthquakes caused widespread destruction, damaged critical infrastructure, and claimed hundreds of lives, prompting India to provide immediate humanitarian assistance.

The Indian government named the mission Operation Amistad to symbolize the strong friendship between India and Venezuela. The Spanish word Amistad means Friendship, reflecting India’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and standing with Venezuela during this humanitarian crisis.

As part of the mission, the government has deployed two Indian Air Force (IAF) C-17 Globemaster aircraft carrying emergency relief supplies, medical equipment, and BHISHM cubes—portable emergency medical units designed to deliver rapid healthcare during disasters. The aircraft are also transporting additional humanitarian aid to support rescue and relief operations in the earthquake-affected areas.

Defence officials coordinated the mission to ensure the swift delivery of essential supplies to affected communities. The deployment highlights India’s expanding role in global disaster response and its continued commitment to assisting countries affected by natural calamities.

According to Venezuela’s Health Ministry, the earthquakes have killed 235 people and injured more than 1,500. Rescue teams continue searching for survivors while authorities assess the full extent of the damage. Thousands of residents have lost their homes, increasing the urgent need for medical care, food, clean water, shelter, and other emergency assistance.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announced the launch of Operation Amistad through a post on X. He confirmed that two IAF C-17 aircraft had departed for Venezuela carrying urgent humanitarian assistance to support post-earthquake relief efforts.

India has carried out several international humanitarian and disaster relief missions in recent years, providing assistance to countries affected by earthquakes, floods, and other natural disasters. Through Operation Amistad, India has once again demonstrated its commitment to humanitarian assistance, international cooperation, and supporting friendly nations during times of crisis.
