Gujarat on Red Alert as Ahmedabad Receives 177 mm Rainfall in Just Two Hours

Ahmedabad came to a standstill on Thursday after an intense spell of monsoon rain brought 177 mm of rainfall within just two hours. The heavy downpour, recorded between 10 a.m. and 12 noon, flooded roads, disrupted traffic, and stranded commuters across the city. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) declared a holiday for all schools and colleges on July 24 as rain continued in several parts of Gujarat. According to civic officials, the southwest and northwest zones recorded the highest rainfall of around nine inches, while other parts of the city also experienced widespread waterlogging. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned that heavy rainfall could continue in several districts.

Ahmedabad Flooded After 177 mm Rainfall in Just Two Hours

The heavy rain exposed serious drainage problems across Ahmedabad as roads quickly turned into rivers. Traffic came to a halt in many areas, and several cars and two-wheelers stalled in waist-deep water. Visuals from Manekbagh showed motorists pushing their vehicles through flooded streets. Residents questioned the city’s monsoon preparedness and criticized civic authorities for failing to prevent waterlogging despite annual pre-monsoon work. Ambli village in the Bopal area also witnessed severe flooding, with water entering homes and damaging public infrastructure. Many families struggled to carry out daily activities as floodwaters surrounded residential colonies.

The rainfall also caused several emergency situations across the city. A pond embankment collapsed, sending three parked cars into the water and triggering protests from local residents. Floodwater entered an Arogya Kendra, forcing officials to temporarily close the entrance after water accumulated inside the premises. Residents alleged that emergency help arrived slowly and said they relied on neighbours for immediate assistance. Although some children enjoyed playing in the rain, many families faced property damage as water entered their houses. The incidents highlighted the growing impact of urban flooding during the ongoing monsoon season.

IMD Issues Red Alert as Rescue Teams Intensify Relief Operations

Emergency services remained on high alert throughout the day to handle rain-related incidents. The fire department responded to calls involving fallen trees, wall collapses, and electrical short circuits. Police personnel, firefighters, and municipal workers helped stranded residents and cleared affected areas. The AMC advised citizens to avoid 15 severely waterlogged roads and temporarily closed eight major underpasses until water levels receded. Authorities also opened three gates of the Vasna Barrage to lower the Sabarmati River’s water level and improve drainage, helping reduce flooding in several parts of the city.

The IMD continued to issue weather warnings as heavy rainfall affected different regions of Gujarat. South Gujarat remained under a red alert, while parts of Central Gujarat and Saurashtra stayed under an orange alert. Mahisagar, Dahod, and Panchmahal districts also faced warnings for extremely heavy rainfall. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel to review the flood situation. The Central Government assured the state of full assistance for relief and rescue operations as authorities urged people to remain alert and follow official advisories.
