Assam Floods: Death Toll Stays at 68, Over 5 Lakh Affected

Assam’s flood situation improved slightly on Monday, with no new deaths reported during the last 24 hours. Despite improving conditions, floodwaters continue affecting 4.45 lakh people across six districts, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

Officials confirmed that the death toll from this year’s floods remains unchanged at 68, offering some relief after weeks of devastation. However, thousands of families continue facing displacement, damaged homes, submerged farmland, and disrupted livelihoods as authorities maintain large-scale rescue and relief operations.

The ASDMA reported that 4,45,495 people remain affected in Sivasagar, Golaghat, Charaideo, Jorhat, Nagaon, and Kamrup (Metropolitan) districts. Although floodwaters receded in several areas, officials continue monitoring vulnerable locations where water levels remain high. On Sunday, authorities recorded more than 5.24 lakh affected people, indicating a gradual improvement in the overall flood situation. Nevertheless, many villages remain inaccessible, forcing residents to depend on government assistance and emergency relief services.

Relief Operations Continue as Flood Damage Persists

Charaideo remains the worst-affected district, with 1,88,404 people still impacted by the floods. Sivasagar follows with 1,44,461 affected residents, while Jorhat has 74,458 people struggling with flood-related hardships. Authorities continue operating 90 relief camps, providing shelter to 28,695 displaced people. Officials have also established 94 relief distribution centers to ensure families receive food, drinking water, medicines, and other essential supplies without interruption.

The ASDMA reported that the Dhansiri (South) River continues flowing above the danger level at Numaligarh in Golaghat district, keeping nearby communities on alert. Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and civil defence organizations remain actively engaged in evacuation, rescue, and relief efforts. Authorities have deployed 67 boats to reach stranded residents and deliver emergency supplies to inaccessible locations.

Floodwaters continue damaging agriculture and infrastructure across the affected districts. Officials reported that 37,139.52 hectares of cropland remain submerged, severely affecting farmers and agricultural production. The floods have also washed away 26,679 animals, causing significant losses to livestock owners. Authorities continue assessing damage to houses, roads, bridges, and other public infrastructure while accelerating restoration work in the affected areas.
