India stands on the brink of a historic achievement as Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace prepares to launch Vikram-1, the country’s first privately developed orbital rocket. The company will launch Mission Aagaman at 11:30 AM IST on July 18 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. If the mission succeeds, Skyroot will become the first Indian private company to place an indigenously built rocket into orbit from Indian soil with support from ISRO. The launch will strengthen India’s private space sector and boost the nation’s presence in the global commercial space industry.

Mission Aagaman Set to Mark a Historic Milestone
Skyroot designed Vikram-1 to reach low-Earth orbit, unlike the Vikram-S suborbital mission that flew in 2022. The four-stage launch vehicle stands nearly seven storeys tall and combines three solid-fuel stages with a restartable liquid-fuel upper stage. This advanced configuration allows the rocket to deploy satellites into precise orbital positions. During the maiden flight, engineers will evaluate the rocket’s propulsion, navigation, guidance, stage separation, flight software, and overall performance before introducing regular commercial launches.
Mission Aagaman will also carry technology demonstration payloads from Indian and international partners. These payloads will test the rocket’s satellite deployment capabilities and validate its performance in orbit. Skyroot will use this mission to prove the reliability of its launch vehicle instead of focusing on commercial operations. A successful demonstration will increase customer confidence and create new opportunities for affordable satellite launch services from India’s growing private aerospace industry.
Vikram-1 Launch Strengthens India’s Private Space Ambitions
Former ISRO engineers Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka founded Skyroot Aerospace in 2018 with the vision of transforming India’s private space ecosystem. The company earned national recognition after successfully launching Vikram-S in November 2022, becoming the first private Indian firm to send a rocket into space. Skyroot has already validated nearly 80 percent of Vikram-1’s systems through previous testing, giving the team greater confidence ahead of its first orbital mission.
A successful Vikram-1 launch will place India among a select group of nations where private companies independently develop and launch orbital rockets. The mission will strengthen India’s commercial space ecosystem by providing satellite operators with another reliable domestic launch option. Skyroot also plans to expand the Vikram family of launch vehicles to deliver flexible, cost-effective, and frequent satellite missions. Mission Aagaman represents a major technological milestone and reinforces India’s ambition to become a leading force in the global space economy.
