India Hosts World Leaders at BRICS Amid Two Wars: What to Expect

India hosts world leaders in New Delhi as the BRICS summit begins amid conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza. Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomes leaders while extensive security measures cover the capital ahead of crucial discussions.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived, while Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will meet Modi during bilateral talks. Chinese President Xi Jinping will also visit India, marking his first trip here in six years. Modi and Xi are expected to discuss improving relations after tensions followed the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes. BRICS began in 2009 as emerging economies sought greater influence within institutions dominated by Western powers. The group has expanded significantly and now includes eleven members representing diverse political and economic interests. Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and UAE participate.

Global Leaders Gather as India Pushes BRICS Cooperation

India, which holds the 2026 chair, has invited member states, partner countries, and outreach participants. Leaders will discuss economic cooperation, global governance, regional conflicts, multilateralism, innovation, resilience, sustainability, and inclusive growth. Wars in Ukraine and the Middle East could expose significant differences among BRICS members during discussions. India expects leaders to seek common ground while strengthening cooperation despite disagreements over international conflicts. The summit will feature opening sessions, thematic discussions, bilateral meetings, exhibitions, cultural events, and leaders’ sessions. Leaders will attend closed discussions focusing on inclusive global governance and stronger multilateral institutions during Saturday’s programme.

They will also visit the Bharat Innovates exhibition, participate in tree planting, and attend Modi’s gala dinner. Partner-country leaders and outreach invitees will join later sessions focused on inclusive global economic growth. New Delhi has placed the capital under heightened security as foreign dignitaries arrive for summit meetings. Around 15,000 Delhi Police personnel, 200 paramilitary companies, and more than 500 cameras will monitor movements. Traffic police will impose temporary restrictions, diversions, and stoppages whenever VVIP convoys travel through major routes. Officials expect disruptions across more than 35 roads, particularly affecting commuters travelling between Delhi, Noida, and Dwarka. Authorities promise continuous traffic movement whenever security conditions allow, while releasing vehicles gradually after convoys pass. The summit will test BRICS unity as India balances strategic partnerships, economic priorities, and competing geopolitical interests.
