Delhi-Dehradun Expressway Develops Massive Potholes, Raising Safety Concerns

A viral video showing two massive potholes on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway has triggered widespread criticism online. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the expressway nearly three months ago to reduce travel time between Delhi and Dehradun. The highway project, built at a cost of Rs 12,000 crore, promised faster and smoother travel for commuters. However, the sudden appearance of potholes raised concerns regarding construction quality and maintenance standards. Social media users questioned how such damage appeared before the monsoon season even started properly.

Delhi-Dehradun Viral Video Raises Safety Concerns on Newly Opened Expressway

The incident came to light after a motorist shared footage from near Hathi Karoda village in Shamli district. The driver claimed several vehicles lost balance while crossing the damaged section unexpectedly during travel. According to the video, at least two cars suffered bent alloy wheels after hitting the potholes forcefully. The footage quickly spread across social media platforms and sparked strong public reactions nationwide. Many commuters expressed disappointment because the expressway opened only seventy-nine days before the incident occurred.

The six-lane expressway became popular because it reduced travel time between Delhi and Dehradun to around two hours. Authorities also highlighted the twelve-kilometer elevated wildlife corridor passing through Rajaji National Park during the project launch. Travelers appreciated the scenic route and improved connectivity between Delhi and Uttarakhand tourist destinations. However, the pothole controversy damaged the project’s image and raised questions about long-term durability concerns. Citizens demanded stricter inspections and better quality checks for major infrastructure projects across the country.

Opposition Targets Government Over Construction Quality Allegations

As criticism intensified online, officials reportedly repaired the damaged highway section through immediate patchwork maintenance work. Entrepreneur Manu questioned the project’s quality in a post directed toward Prime Minister Narendra Modi online. Another user criticized rising toll taxes and fuel prices while highlighting growing safety concerns for commuters. Public frustration increased because authorities promoted the expressway as a world-class infrastructure development project.

Opposition parties also targeted the BJP government after the viral video attracted massive public attention nationwide. Congress spokesperson Dr Shama Mohamed alleged corruption and accused authorities of misusing public development funds during construction. The Aam Aadmi Party shared the video online and criticized the government’s infrastructure claims strongly. Opposition leaders demanded accountability from contractors and officials responsible for supervising the expressway project carefully. The controversy has intensified demands for transparent investigations and stronger quality control measures across highway projects.
