Fadnavis Vows Tough Action on Nagpur Cop Attackers: Will Retrieve Them From Graves

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday promised strict action against those responsible for attacking police officers during the violent clashes in Nagpur this week.

Fadnavis Condemns Attack on Police, Vows Stern Action

During the assembly session, Fadnavis describe the attack on police as a deliberate “conspiracy” and declare. “We will retrieve them from their graves, but those who attack the police in Nagpur will not be spared.”

Fadnavis also pointed out that a mob engaged in stone-pelting against the police. “Around 80 people were involve in the attack. A police officer was assaulte with an axe, and three deputy commissioners were also target. Specific houses were deliberately attacke. And one DCP face an axe attack,” he stated.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the role of rumors in escalating violence saying that the violence erupted due to a rumor about a religious symbol on the symbolic grave sheet.

He said, “Rumours were spread that things containing religious content were burnt….It looks like a well-plan attack. No one has permission to take law and order into their hands.”

Clashes broke out in Nagpur’s Chitnis Park area in Mahal on Monday. Police were attack with stones following rumours that a religious text had been desecrat during a protest by a right-wing group demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district.

Meanwhile, a key suspect, identifie as Fahim Shamim Khan, the one who gathere dozens of people in at least two different places, hours before the Nagpur riots, was arreste on Tuesday night and will remain in police custody until March 21.

The FIR, accessed exclusively by CNN-News18, stated that Khan first asked people to gather near a police station and then near a mosque in the Mahal area of Nagpur, where the clashes erupted. Police are probing his role in the clashes.

Multiple videos from March 17 have shown rioters purportedly raising slogans in support of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, and referring to him as ‘Alamgir Hazrat’. Khan allegedly provoked people, incited violence, and play a role in spreading rumours that a holy book was desecrate.

Nagpur Police DCP Rahul Madne said that several houses have been identifie from where stones were pelte on the cops.

“We have identified the houses from which stones were pelte at us. Now their combing operation is going on and they will be arreste. Further interrogation in underway of those who have been arreste so far. As of now, five people have been arreste on the basis of CCTV footage,” he said.
