Who is Barbara Jabarika, the Hungarian woman who allegedly honey-trapped Choksi?

Mehul Choksi, the fugitive diamond trader wanted in India for his alleged involvement in the ₹13,500 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud, claimed that kidnappers tortured him and took him by boat from Antigua to Dominica. Over the weekend, Belgian police, in coordination with Indian authorities, apprehended him while he reportedly tried to flee to Switzerland under the guise of seeking medical treatment. Choksi owns the Gitanjali Group.

Choksi Arrest Sheds Light on Alleged Honeytrap Plot

The arrest marks a breakthrough in Indian authorities’ relentless seven-year pursuit across three countries. However, one of the most dramatic twists in the Mehul Choksi saga came when he claimed to be the target of an elaborate ‘honey-trap and abduction plot’ involving a Hungarian woman named Barbara Jabarika. Choksi fled India in 2018 and resurfaced in Antigua and Barbuda, where he had secured citizenship through investment. He remained under the radar for years until he surfaced in Dominica in May 2021, when authorities arrested him for illegal entry. That’s when the Barbara Jabarika angle began to unfold.

Choksi Links Barbara to Abduction, Her Background Questioned

Choksi claimed that someone abducted, tortured, and placed him on a boat that transported him from Antigua to Dominica, alleging that Barbara was involved in the plot. Barbara’s LinkedIn profile identifies her as a “Property Investment Agent” from Bulgaria and describes her as an “Experienced Sales Negotiator” with a strong background in Direct Sales and the Real Estate Industry. It highlights her skills in Customer Service, Sales Negotiations, Leadership, and Team Coordination, and states that she has over 10 years of sales experience, having held management roles in both Property and Retail.

Choksi’s Wife Alleges Honeytrap, Barbara Denies Claims

Choksi’s wife Priti claimed they met Hungarian national Barbara Jabarika in 2020 and accused her of being part of a honeytrap plot, NDTV reported. Choksi alleged that Barbara befriended him under false pretences and invited him to dinner just before the alleged abduction—where he was overpowered and forcibly taken away. However, Barbara dismissed Priti Choksi’s accusations and denied reports labeling her as Choksi’s “girlfriend,” according to the publication.
