Sonia Gandhi: Complaint Seeks Probe Into Alleged Vande Mataram Disruption

The complaint alleges that Sonia Gandhi made gestures while singers moved towards the later stanzas of Vande Mataram. The complainants claimed that her gestures and interactions with people present at the event indicated possible objections to continuing the rendition. They also referred to purported video footage involving Rahul Gandhi, who allegedly made remarks questioning the singing of Vande Mataram during the programme.

The complainants asked authorities to establish the intention and circumstances behind the alleged actions. They also referred to the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which seeks to extend legal protection to the National Song. According to the complaint, the proposed provision could punish anyone who intentionally prevents or disturbs the singing of the National Anthem or National Song.

BJP Criticises Congress Leaders as Police Examine Complaint

The controversy has triggered a strong political response from the BJP. BJP leaders criticised the Congress leadership and demanded an apology from Sonia Gandhi over the alleged incident. Congress, however, rejected the allegations and maintained that nobody attempted to stop the complete rendition of Vande Mataram. Party leaders have also argued that the later stanzas contain religious imagery that some communities may find objectionable.

Delhi Police acknowledged receiving the complaint and said officials were examining the matter. Meanwhile, similar complaints have emerged in Odisha and Bengaluru, where BJP Yuva Morcha members also raised the issue through protests and demands for action. The developments have turned the Vande Mataram incident into a wider political dispute, with both sides presenting different accounts of what happened during the Independence Day programme.
