The accused, identified as Udaybhanu Biswas, lived in Teli Mohalla under the Sadar Bazar police station area. According to police officials, Biswas failed to perform the last rites of his 35-year-old daughter Priyanka after her death and instead kept her body inside a locked room in their residence for months.Police said the matter surfaced in April when residents living nearby became suspicious due to a strong and persistent foul smell emanating from the house. Several locals reportedly tried to contact the family, but after receiving no clear response, they informed the police. A police team later reached the house and conducted a search.
During the inspection on April 10, officers recovered the decomposed remains of Priyanka from one of the rooms. Sources said the body had deteriorated severely and had almost turned into a skeleton by the time police found it. Officials stated that Biswas kept the room locked for a long period, and investigators suspect he regularly sprayed perfume and room fresheners inside the house to hide the smell. Preliminary investigation revealed that Priyanka died due to illness on December 1, 2025. However, Biswas did not inform authorities, neighbours, or relatives about her death for several months. Police said Biswas continued living in the same house with the body during this period.

Investigators said he appeared mentally disturbed during questioning, following which he was referred for psychiatric evaluation at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Medical College.Police officials stated that medical experts examined his mental condition before further legal action was taken. After the evaluation and investigation process, Biswas was formally arrested on Wednesday.
The incident has created shock and concern among local residents, many of whom said they were unaware of the situation inside the house until the smell became unbearable. Neighbours described the family as mostly isolated and said they rarely interacted with others in the locality.Authorities said the investigation is still ongoing, and police are examining all aspects of the case, including the circumstances that led the elderly man to keep his daughter’s body inside the house for such a long period.
