Rakesh Rathore Arrested at Congress MP Briefing

Sitapur police took Congress MP Rakesh Rathore into custody on rape charges after he avoided arrest for two weeks. His request for anticipatory bail had been denied before his detention.

Police arrested Congress MP Rakesh Rathore on rape charges in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh, during a press briefing on Thursday. The arrest followed a two-week manhunt, according to Sitapur Superintendent of Police (SP) Chakresh Mishra. Rathore is accused of raping a 45-year-old woman, whom he allegedly promised to marry and advance politically over the past four years.

The police filed an FIR against Congress MP Rakesh Rathore on January 17 for rape, intimidation, and firearm threats. He had been absconding while seeking anticipatory bail, but the Allahabad High Court denied his petition and ordered him to surrender in Sitapur court within two weeks.

Court directed the MP to surrender

The MP’s lawyer argued that the case, filed after a four-year delay, should warrant relief and requested Justice Rajesh Singh Chauhan’s single bench to grant it. However, additional advocate general Vinod Kumar Shahi, representing the prosecution, urged the court to reject the petition, arguing that the accused should not receive immediate relief in this case. The court ultimately dismissed the plea, directing Rakesh Rathore to surrender before the Sitapur district and sessions court within two weeks. On January 23, the Sitapur MP/MLA court also rejected Rathore’s anticipatory bail application. Earlier, Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) president Ajay Rai had called for a judicial inquiry into the allegations against the MP.
