US authorities charged Indian gang leader Lawrence Bishnoi with organizing Canadian Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s 2023 assassination.
Bishnoi remains imprisoned in India while authorities accuse him of directing the murder from his jail cell. Prosecutors also charged Bishnoi’s childhood friend Satinderjeet Singh for allegedly helping coordinate the assassination plot together. Authorities have not arrested Satinderjeet Singh, and investigators continue searching for him despite international law enforcement efforts. Investigators alleged Bishnoi used smuggled mobile phones inside prison to communicate with co-conspirators during planning operations. Prosecutors said Bishnoi supplied Nijjar’s photograph and several addresses to help attackers locate their intended target.

Multinational Probe Targets Indian Crime Syndicates
US authorities announced these charges during a multinational operation targeting Indian crime syndicates involved in serious transnational offences. Investigators arrested thirty-seven defendants connected with kidnappings, extortion, firearms trafficking, drug smuggling, racketeering, and murder across countries. Officials from the FBI, Los Angeles Police Department, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and prosecutors coordinated the extensive investigation. Authorities continue searching for additional fugitives believed located across the United States, India, and several European countries.
Nijjar’s killing severely damaged diplomatic relations between Canada and India following public allegations of government involvement. Former Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau cited credible allegations linking Indian government agents to Nijjar’s fatal shooting.
Nijjar actively supported the Khalistan movement and organized unofficial referendums among Sikh diaspora communities before his death. Indian authorities had declared Nijjar wanted and previously offered rewards for information leading to his arrest. Investigators also accused criminal syndicates of exploiting corrupt officials, stealing drugs, and expanding criminal operations internationally across continents. Authorities alleged some suspects continued directing criminal activities while detained inside secure immigration facilities despite official supervision.
