Odisha’s KIIT Tragedy A Silent Struggle and Unfulfilled Dreams

Barely two hours before her tragic death, 20-year-old Prakriti Lamsal, a bright engineering student at Odisha’s Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), assured her mother over a phone call that she would contact her again after attending the college fest. Prakriti, who hailed from Kathmandu, Nepal, had big dreams of excelling in the IT industry and making her parents proud.

However, the next call her family received shattered their world Odisha’s university officials informed them of her suicide and urged them to reach Bhubaneswar immediatels.

A Promising Future Cut Short

Prakriti’s untimely death has left her family and friends in shock. Her father, Sunil Lamsal, waited outside the AIIMS Bhubaneswar morgue, struggling to comprehend the devastating news. “We were speechless,” he said, recalling how his daughter sounded absolutely normal when she last spoke to her mother at 2:51 PM on Sunday. She had mentioned heading to the fest and being unavailable due to network issues.

Prakriti, known for her academic excellence, was an introvert who rarely opened up about her struggles. She had traveled to KIIT in 2022 along with her father to attend a student conference in Kathmandu, which convinced her to pursue computer science engineering at the institution. She was joined by her cousins Anurodh and Siddhant, who also gained admission to different branches of engineering.

Harassment Allegations Ignored

Following Prakriti’s death, disturbing allegations have emerged.According to her family, she reported misbehavior and harassment by a 21-year-old student from Lucknow, and authorities have since arrested him.They claim the university failed to take any concrete action despite her complaints. KIIT, however, has stated that both individuals were counseled and let go.

During protests by Nepalese students, the university further claimed that Prakriti and the accused were in a relationship, but her family strongly refuted this assertion.

A Silent Struggle No One Knew About

Friends and relatives now regret not knowing the extent of Prakriti’s suffering. Nishan Kanel, who accompanied Prakriti’s father to Bhubaneswar, described her as a reserved child since childhood. His daughter, now residing in Canada and a close friend of Prakriti, was the only one Prakriti confided in about the harassment. However, fearing social stigma and embarrassment, Prakriti had begged her not to reveal anything.

Her cousin Siddhant Sigdel, who filed the police complaint, admitted that neither he nor Anurodh—who frequently met Prakriti in classes and labs had any clue about her emotional turmoil. “We never imagined she was going through something like this,” he said.

A batchmate added, “She diligently studied, attended all classes, and never displayed any signs of distress.”We never knew what she was going through.”

A Bright Mind Lost Too Soon

Prakriti had a promising future ahead. Described as a brilliant student, she dreamed of securing a successful career in the IT industry and making her parents proud. Her death has raised serious questions about student safety, mental health support, and the university’s handling of harassment complaints.

As her grieving family awaits justice, the tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the silent battles many students face, often unnoticed until it is too late.
