Suvendu Adhikari personal assistant, Chandranath Rath, was shot dead in Madhyamgram near Kolkata in a shocking attack that has intensified political tensions in West Bengal. Bike-borne assailants reportedly followed his car before opening fire on the moving vehicle. The incident took place just two days after the BJP’s major victory in the Assembly election.
According to reports, the attackers targeted Rath when his car slowed down on the road. They fired four rounds, three of which struck him while he was seated inside the vehicle. Visuals from the scene showed bullet holes and cracks on the car’s front-side window, highlighting the severity of the attack.
Chandranath Rath had worked closely with Suvendu Adhikari for several years and handled many of the BJP leader’s political coordination activities. Party members considered him a trusted aide and an important part of Adhikari’s inner circle. His death has shocked BJP workers and supporters across the state.

After the attack, Suvendu Adhikari rushed to the hospital where police had taken Rath’s body. The driver of the vehicle, identified as Buddhadeb, also suffered injuries during the firing and received medical treatment. Adhikari was not inside the car at the time of the attack.
Dibyendu Adhikari, Suvendu Adhikari’s brother, demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He alleged that members of the All India Trinamool Congress could be linked to the incident. Several BJP leaders also accused the ruling party of encouraging a culture of political violence in the state.
Suvendu Adhikari described the incident as a “cold-blooded murder” and claimed that the attackers had conducted reconnaissance before carrying out the shooting. Speaking outside the hospital, he said the manner in which the assailants executed the attack clearly indicated prior planning. BJP leaders strongly condemned the killing and demanded immediate action against those responsible.
Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress condemned the murder and accused BJP-backed miscreants of triggering post-poll violence in different parts of the state. Police officials said authorities had detained and arrested several people in connection with violence-related incidents. The killing has further escalated political tensions in West Bengal following the closely fought Assembly election.
