Supreme Court rebukes CBI on Bengal violence case transfer

The Supreme Court expressed strong disapproval of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday for its request to transfer post-poll violence cases from West Bengal to another state. The court directed the agency to withdraw its petition, highlighting serious concerns regarding allegations of hostility during court proceedings.

During the hearing, the CBI had filed a transfer petition, prompting the apex court to respond critically, stating, “It is very unfortunate that a central agency like the CBI has cast aspersions against the entire judiciary in West Bengal.” The court found the claims of hostility in hearings across all courts to be particularly troubling.In its response, the Supreme Court emphasized the importance of maintaining faith in the judiciary and condemned any actions that undermine this trust. The court’s remarks underscored the gravity of the situation, as the integrity of the judicial system is vital for the rule of law.

CBI Clarifies Intent Amid Supreme Court Concerns

Additional Solicitor General S.V. Raju, who represented the CBI, clarified that there was no intention to cast aspersions against the judiciary. He expressed regret over the wording used in the petition and reassured the court that the agency respects the judicial process in West Bengal.
