The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Delhi Police to take a strict approach toward crimes against women. The court said authorities must create a strong sense of fear among criminals to prevent serious offences. Justice JB Pardiwala stressed the need for firm action against those involved in rape and other grave crimes. The remarks came during a suo motu hearing on rising rape cases in Delhi. The court said stronger measures are necessary to improve women’s safety in the capital.
SC Stresses Need for Strong Deterrence
Justice JB Pardiwala said police must create an atmosphere where criminals fear the consequences of committing serious offences. He said authorities cannot prevent such crimes without taking firm action against offenders. The court also discussed concerns raised by groups citing Article 21, which guarantees the right to life. The bench said authorities must focus on dealing firmly with criminals involved in heinous crimes. It also stressed the importance of protecting citizens while maintaining law and order.
The Supreme Court also questioned the Delhi Police about steps taken to prevent crimes before they happen. The bench referred to a recent gang rape case in Kalkaji, where the incident reportedly occurred near the victim’s college. Justice Pardiwala noted that people had allegedly warned the police about the accused in the case. The court asked why authorities could not act on such warnings. It said proactive policing could help prevent serious crimes.

Court Questions Delhi Police Over Preventive Measures
The bench emphasised that women must feel safe across Delhi at all times. It said authorities should ensure that women can walk on roads at 10 PM or travel by metro without fear. The court stressed that safety should remain a priority in public places and during daily travel. It called for better coordination between authorities to tackle crimes against women. The court also sought information from Delhi Police about setting up a war room to address the issue.

It asked the police to strengthen their preventive measures and respond more effectively to warnings about potential offenders.
