Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal suffered a minor hand injury after a Nihang allegedly attacked him with a sharp weapon inside a gurdwara in Nanded, Maharashtra, on Thursday. The incident occurred around 11 am, shortly after Badal arrived in Nanded from Punjab for a personal visit. Authorities had provided him security under the scheduled arrangements during his visit.

Sukhbir Badal Attacked Inside Nanded Gurdwara

The attacker reportedly approached Badal inside the gurdwara and struck him with a weapon believed to be a kirpan. Badal sustained an injury to his right hand and received immediate medical attention. Security personnel took him to Yashosai Hospital, where doctors treated him. Hospital authorities stated that Badal remained out of danger following the incident. Inspector Santosh Kendre, who formed part of Badal’s security detail, also suffered minor injuries while attempting to protect him. Police detained the suspected attacker shortly after the incident and began questioning him. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the attack and are collecting information from witnesses present at the gurdwara.

The incident has drawn attention because Badal previously faced an attempted shooting at the Golden Temple in December 2024. At that time, Narain Singh Chaura, a former Babbar Khalsa International terrorist and Khalistani activist, allegedly opened fire at Badal while he served as a ‘sewadar’ at the temple entrance. Badal escaped unharmed during that incident. Badal, the son of former Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, continues to receive treatment for his minor hand injury. Police are investigating the latest attack and questioning the detained suspect to establish the motive. Officials are also reviewing security arrangements at the gurdwara and examining how the attacker managed to approach Badal. Further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
