Kejriwal’s Lawyer Calls CBI Arrest ‘Bail Insurance’

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s legal battle continues as the Supreme Court. Hears his pleas challenging his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). In the scrapped excise policy case and seeking bail. Despite being granted bail in a separate Enforcement Directorate (ED) case on July 12. Kejriwal remains in custody due to his earlier arrest by the CBI on June 25.

A Supreme Court Bench, consisting of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan. Heard his bail plea on August 14 but denied interim relief. The hearing was adjourned to September 5, allowing the CBI time to submit its counter affidavit. In its response, the CBI defended Kejriwal’s arrest, stating it was necessary due to his “evasive and non-cooperative” behavior. During questioning about his alleged involvement in the case. The agency further argued that Kejriwal’s role in the case differs from that of his co-accused, meaning he cannot seek bail on the same grounds. Notably, former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, BRS leader K Kavitha, and former AAP communications in-charge Vijay Nair have already been granted bail by the Supreme Court.

Kejriwal’s Bail Hangs in Balance

Kejriwal was first arrested by the ED on March 21 in connection with the alleged excise policy scam after the Delhi High Court denied his plea for interim protection from arrest. Though he secured bail from the Supreme Court in the ED case on July 12, his release was prevented due to his subsequent CBI arrest.

The Delhi CM was taken into CBI custody on June 26 following a hearing at Rouse Avenue Court, and on June 29, he was remanded to judicial custody. As the Supreme Court continues to deliberate, the outcome of his bail plea remains uncertain.
