Hostage crisis during SIR: SC brands Bengal as most polarised state

Seven judicial officers engaged in the SIR process faced a tense situation in Malda district. A group allegedly surrounded and confined them for nearly nine hours outside the Kaliachak II Block Development Office (BDO). The prolonged gherao disrupted official work and created a threatening environment, preventing the officers from performing their duties effectively.

CJI questions Collector’s absence till late night

The Supreme Court strongly criticised the West Bengal administration after a serious security lapse during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. Chief Justice of India (CJI) highlighted that the district Collector remained absent until 11 PM, raising concerns over administrative accountability. The court questioned the state’s preparedness and response, especially during a sensitive electoral exercise, and stressed the need for stricter supervision.

The Supreme Court expressed serious concern over the incident and described West Bengal as the “most polarised state” in the country. It stated that the situation appeared to be pre-planned and deliberately executed to obstruct the SIR process. The bench emphasised that such actions directly undermine democratic procedures and cannot be tolerated under any circumstances.

In response, the court directed authorities to deploy central forces to ensure the safety of officials involved in the revision process. It also underlined the importance of maintaining law and order during elections and safeguarding officers carrying out constitutional duties. The court’s remarks send a strong message about accountability and the need to prevent any attempts to disrupt electoral processes.
