Supreme Court Opens Suo Motu Hearing in Kolkata Case

The Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, has resumed its hearing. In the suo motu case concerning the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9, 2024. The case has sparked protests by junior doctors, who have refused to return to work despite an ultimatum from the court. On September 9, the bench had ordered the protesting doctors to rejoin their duties by 5 p.m. The following day, but this directive was not followed, and the protests have persisted.

The Supreme Court expressed concern over the delayed filing of the First Information Report (FIR). Noting a 14-hour gap before it was lodged. The bench also highlighted the absence of a critical document, the challan. Which should have accompanied the body for post-mortem examination. As a result, the West Bengal government was instructed to produce the missing document at the next hearing.

CM Replaces Key Officials, Doctors Await Implementation

On September 16, 2024, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee addressed some of the demands of the protesting doctors. Announcing the replacement of key officials, including Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal. The Deputy Commissioner of Kolkata Police (North), and two senior health department officials. This move was hailed by the protesting doctors as a significant victory after 38 days of protest in their pursuit of justice for their deceased colleague.

Despite this breakthrough, the doctors have stated that they will only resume their duties after ensuring that these assurances are implemented. They plan to consult with other protesting doctors across hospitals before deciding on their next steps. The meeting between the Chief Minister and a group of around 40 doctors at her residence marked a key development in this ongoing issue.
