On Sunday, the Cyberabad police in Telangana booked 25 individuals, including Tollywood actors and social media influencers, for allegedly promoting illegal betting, gambling, and casino apps, leading to financial losses for the public. Among those named in the FIR are actors Rana Daggubati, Prakash Raj, Vijay Deverakonda, Manchu Lakshmi, Praneetha, and Nidhi Agarwal. Rana Daggubati and Prakash Raj are accused of promoting betting through Junglee Rummy via pop-up ads, while Vijay Deverakonda promoted the betting app A23 Rummy, Manchu Lakshmi endorsed Yolo247 betting, Praneetha promoted Fairplay Live, and Nidhi Agarwal advertised Jeet Win, all through pop-up ads, according to the police.

Police Commissioner Details Investigation into Betting Apps Promoters
Avinash Mohanty, Commissioner of Police, This is just the beginning of the investigation. We will examine these apps, identify the people involved, determine their sources, and explore other aspects. Based on the case’s merit and available evidence, we will proceed. The police registered the FIR under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including 318(4) (cheating), 112 (petty organized crime), and 49 (abetment). Additionally, the FIR includes provisions from the Telangana State Gaming Act (TSGA) Sections 3, 3(A), and 4 (common gaming house), as well as Section 66(D) of the Information Technology (IT) Act (cheating by personation using computer resources).

FIR Highlights Financial Harm Caused by Betting Apps and Violations of Gambling Laws
The FIR stated, These platforms the public, particularly those in desperate financial situations, to invest their hard-earned money and family savings into these apps/websites, gradually leading to addiction and ultimately resulting in financial ruin. The FIR also listed several betting apps, stating, All the mentioned betting applications are in direct violation of gambling laws, particularly the Public Gambling Act of 1867, and are causing harm to individuals and society by promoting this addictive, easy-money scheme, which leads to financial hardship.

Complainant Warns of Growing Financial Harm from Betting Apps Targeting Vulnerable Populations
According to the complainant, these platforms involve significant sums of money, causing financial distress, particularly among middle and lower-middle-class families. The complainant stated, The mentioned apps and individuals are just the beginning. Many more people are promoting gambling, betting, and casino apps/websites that aim to attract young adults and the general public with the promise of easy money, ultimately leading them to financial ruin. These platforms are actively advertising their apps/websites on social media, with the help of celebrities and influencers, making it easier to reach their target audience without the users even actively searching for them, which worsens the issue.
