Case Filed Against Meta India Head Over Posts Targeting PM Modi During CJP Protest

Hyderabad Cybercrime Police have registered cases against Meta India head Arun Srinivas and several Facebook and Instagram accounts over allegedly objectionable content targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The cases followed complaints from S Aravind Reddy, a 29-year-old businessman, and T Saikiran Goud, a Telangana BJP activist. Both complainants claimed they encountered multiple morphed and digitally manipulated videos and images of Modi while browsing Instagram. According to their complaints, the content portrayed the Prime Minister in an obscene, derogatory, misleading, and offensive manner. They also alleged that users posted abusive comments, ridicule, and indecent remarks targeting Modi and other individuals appearing in the manipulated material.

Meta Faces Scrutiny Over Allegedly Offensive Posts Against Modi

The complainants said the offensive comments encouraged wider circulation and increased engagement with the controversial posts. They further claimed that some content appeared digitally altered or AI-generated and circulated widely across social media platforms. According to the complaints, such material could mislead the public, spread misinformation, provoke hatred, disturb public order, and encourage hostility between different sections of society. Police are also examining several posts and comments shared during recent student protests that allegedly contained profanity and abusive language.

The development comes after Meta faced criticism from the government when Facebook briefly blocked a video posted from Modi’s account earlier this week. Meta subsequently assured the government that it would introduce stronger safeguards for posts from the Prime Minister’s account. Sources said senior Meta officials would review such posts, while at least two senior officials would conduct checks before making significant decisions. Meta representatives are also expected to meet government officials to discuss content regulation and other concerns. Earlier, Delhi Police directed several social media platforms to remove offensive posts and videos targeting Modi during student protests at Jantar Mantar and the July 20 Sansad Chalo march. Police also issued notices to several social media accounts, including some news portals, over allegedly abusive content targeting the Prime Minister.
