Suspect Arrested with Firearms and Fake ID Near Trump Rally

The suspect is facing gun charges after being found with load firearms, several passports. And a fake license plate, according to the local sheriff on Sunday. Trump’s rally occurred in the Coachella Valley, famous for its annual music and arts festival.

“On Saturday, October 12, 2024, at 4:59 p.m., Deputies at former President. Donald Trump’s rally in the Coachella Valley approached the driver of a black SUV at a checkpoint located. At Avenue 52 and Celebration Drive,” the police stated.

Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco expressed belief that his department prevented an assassination attempt, though he admitted it was “speculation.” The suspect was release on bail on Saturday, according to jail records. A federal official confirmed on Sunday that an investigation is in progress.

“What we know is that he arrived with multiple passports under different names. An unregistered vehicle with a fake license plate, and loaded firearms,” the sheriff stated at a news conference on Sunday. “I genuinely believe we prevented another assassination attempt.”

The 49-year-old man, identifie as Vem Miller from Las Vegas, was stopp in a black SUV by sheriff’s deputies around 5 p.m. local time on Saturday and was taken into custody without incident, before Trump had taken the stage.

Jail records indicate Miller was release on $5,000 bail on Saturday after being charged with possession of a loaded firearm and a high-capacity magazine, both misdemeanors. He could not be reache for comment on Sunday. The sheriff’s office noted in a press release that the incident did not jeopardize the safety of former President Trump or event attendees.

The U.S. Attorney’s Los Angeles office stated on its website Sunday that Trump was not in danger, referencing the U.S. Secret Service. The statement also mention that, while no federal arrests had been make, an investigation was still ongoing.

Trump narrowly survived an assassination attempt in July, when a gunman’s bullet grazed his ear during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. In September, another man was charge with trying to assassinate Trump after Secret Service agents discover him hiding with a rifle near Trump’s Palm Beach golf course. He pleaded not guilty.  Those attempts raised questions about Secret Service security planning and response.
