Conversion of Pagers into Explosive Devices Before Lebanon Blasts

On Tuesday, hundreds of handheld pagers used by Hezbollah detonated throughout Lebanon and parts of Syria. Resulting in at least 11 deaths and over 3,000 injuries. The explosions were caus by new devices recently obtain by the grouping which has been modifi to contain small explosives.

Allegations of Israeli Intelligence Involvement in Pagers Explosions

Israeli intelligence is suspect of orchestrating the attack by embedding explosives in the pagers before they were deliver to Hezbollah. Early reports indicated that this operation involved injecting explosive materials into 5,000 pagers. Manufactured in Taiwan that the group had ordered months prior to the blasts. However, on Wednesday, Taiwanese company Gold Apollo denied claims that it had produced the explosive-packed pagers used by Hezbollah. Which detonated simultaneously and resulted in at least nine fatalities.

“They are not our products in any way. How could we manufacture items that aren’t ours?” says company head Hsu Chin-kuang to reporters.in Taipei after the New York Times. Suggest that his company’s pagers were link to the explosions. Earlier reports indicate that the Israeli intelligence agency has place a highly explosive material on the batteries of the devices. Which could be detonate remotely by increasing the temperature of the batteries.

According to the New York Times, Israel tampered with the devices ordered by Hezbollah. Placing two ounces of explosive material next to the battery in each pager. A switch was also embedd to allow for remote detonation. The report stated that Hezbollah fighters received a message at 3:30 p.m. local time. That seemed to come from the group’s leadership. This message was follow by a short pause, likely designed to give the fighters. Time to bring their pagers to their faces before the devices exploded.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah had previously cautioned members against using cellphones because of concerns about Israeli surveillance. Consequently, the group switched to pagers for more secure communication. However, this change proved disastrous when the devices overheated and exploded in users’ pockets or hands. An unnamed Hezbollah official informed The Wall Street Journal that some members noticed their pager. Heating up and discarded them before they detonated.

Hezbollah officials have accused Israel of conducting a “security operation” aimed at their communication devices. An unnamed source told Reuters that “the Mossad inserted a circuit board containing explosive material that responds to a code, making it very difficult to detect with any device or scanner.” They report that 3,000 of the pagers detonate when “a coded message was sent,” which trigger the explosives simultaneously.

This incident represents a notable escalation in hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel amid the ongoing tensions stemming from the conflict in Gaza. While Israeli officials have not addressed the allegations directly, they have suggested that military operations against Hezbollah may intensify in response to continued rocket fire from Lebanon.

Israeli media reports suggest that this attack demonstrates a new level of operational sophistication by Israel, possibly signaling a change in tactics against its adversaries. As investigations into how these pagers were compromise and detonated continue, Hezbollah has pledged to retaliate with “fair punishment” for what it perceives as an act of aggression against its members and sovereignty.
