On Monday, the Supreme Court witnessed a dramatic incident when a lawyer attempted to throw a shoe at Chief Justice of India BR Gavai. The accused advocate, identified as Rakesh Kishore, was immediately detained by the police. Chief Justice Gavai’s Calm Response Amidst Chaos
Chief Justice Gavai displayed remarkable composure during the incident. He urged everyone not to get distracted and instructed the court to continue the hearing smoothly. After the courtroom drama, Gavai held a meeting with court officials, including the Secretary General and security personnel, to discuss the security breach. His calm demeanor reassured everyone present and maintained order in the Supreme Court. Justice Gavai’s ability to stay focused under pressure was widely appreciated by lawyers and court staff alike.
According to a witness, the shoe narrowly missed Justice Vinod Chandran. The accused later apologized to Justice Chandran, clarifying the shoe was intended for the Chief Justice. Rohit Pandey, a Supreme Court lawyer, revealed that Kishore has been a Bar Association member since 2011. Pandey condemned the shoe-throwing and linked the act to the Chief Justice’s earlier controversial remarks. Pandey urged strict action against Kishore, emphasizing that such behavior is unacceptable in the judiciary. Later, Delhi Police released Kishore from custody within the court premises itself.

Lawyer Background of the Controversial Remarks
The incident occurred weeks after Chief Justice Gavai faced criticism for his remarks during a plea regarding the restoration of a damaged Vishnu idol in Madhya Pradesh. Gavai had told the petitioner, “This is purely a publicity interest litigation. Go and ask the deity itself to do something now.” These comments sparked outrage on social media and among legal professionals. Lawyers demanded clarification, questioning the Chief Justice’s approach. Following the backlash, Gavai clarified that his remarks were misrepresented and stressed his respect for all religions.
The shoe-throwing episode highlighted tensions within the legal community over sensitive religious matters. Despite the attack, Chief Justice Gavai’s leadership remained steadfast, ensuring the court’s functioning continued without disruption. The incident prompted a review of court security protocols. It also sparked debates on courtroom conduct and the expression of dissent in judicial settings. The accused lawyer’s release soon after raised further questions about disciplinary measures. Meanwhile, the judiciary reaffirmed its commitment to upholding respect, decorum, and justice at all times.
