SC Directs CBI to Report on Kolkata Case by September 17

A Bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud is currently hearing a case concerning the murder and alleged rape of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The incident, which took place on August 9, has sparked nationwide protests, particularly among the medical community.

The Central government recently filed an application in the Supreme Court accusing the West Bengal government of “unpardonable” non-cooperation in the investigation. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs criticized the TMC-led state government’s alleged lack of support, describing it as “symptomatic of a systemic malaise.” The Centre has urged the court to direct the West Bengal authorities to fully cooperate with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) in the investigation.

Court Urges Doctors to Resume Work Amid Ongoing Protests

During a hearing on August 22, the Supreme Court expressed strong criticism of the Kolkata Police for the delay in registering the case of unnatural death concerning the doctor. The court emphasized the seriousness of the situation and, in an appeal to doctors protesting across the country, urged them to resume work. The bench highlighted that both “justice and medicine” must continue uninterrupted.

Earlier, on August 20, the Supreme Court described the incident as “horrific” and issued several important directives. Among these was the formation of a 10-member National Task Force, which has been tasked with developing protocols to ensure the safety and security of doctors and healthcare professionals in India.

The junior doctor’s death, discovered in the hospital’s seminar hall, has ignited widespread outrage and concern over the safety of medical practitioners. The case continues to be a focal point of public and legal scrutiny, as the top court works to address both the investigation and broader safety concerns.
