A shocking case of ragging has emerged from a government nursing college in Kottayam, Kerala, where first-year students were reportedly forced to strip and subjected to torture involving dumbbells.
Police said they arrested five third-year nursing students for the alleged ragging after three first-year students filed a complaint, a news agency PTI reported.
As per the complaint, registered under the Anti-Ragging Act, the ragging began in November 2024 and had been going on at the institute since then.

Forced to apply lotion to wounds
The victims detailed the series of violent acts the seniors inflicted on them, stating that the latter forced them to stand naked and then hung dumbbells, meant for weightlifting, from their private parts.
The complainants alleged that the third-year students also inflicted other serious injuries on them using compasses and similar objects, after which they would force them to apply lotion on the wounds to induce further pain.
The complaint also mentioned that seniors forced the students to have cream applied to their faces and hands and smeared it into their mouths. Reportedly, the seniors threatened the complainants of critical consequences if they chose to speak up about the abuse.
On top of all this, the complaint also stated that the senior students consistently extorted money from the juniors on Sundays to purchase alcohol, following which they assaulted them.
The ordeal became too much for the victims to bear, prompting the three of them to file a complaint with the Kottayam Gandhinagar, Kerala police. The police will present the five third-year students arrested in court on Wednesday afternoon.
Kerala General Education Minister
This incident follows closely on the heels of a tragic event in Kochi, where a 14-year-old boy reportedly took his own life, allegedly due to ragging at his school, according to his family. In response, Kerala General Education Minister V Sivankutty has instructed the Director of Education (DGE) to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed his condolences over the tragic suicide of a student due to bullying, emphasizing that no child should have to face such abuse. He stated, “Bullying is not harmless; it ruins lives. Parents must instill values of kindness, love, empathy, and the bravery to speak out. If a child says someone is bullying them, believe them and take action if they bully others.
