IIT-B apologises over suicide remark, removes professor’s post; director remains in position

IIT Bombay has apologised for its earlier statement about the circumstances surrounding student Sahil Wakode’s death. The institute said authorities are still investigating the events that preceded his death. It acknowledged that the earlier communication described certain details before investigators had officially established them. The institute said it should not have characterised those circumstances while the investigation remained underway. The apology comes as students continue protests and demand accountability from the administration.

IIT Bombay Withdraws Earlier Statement and Issues Apology

The institute had earlier stated that Wakode faced an examination-related incident shortly before his death. According to the institute, officials found him using a smartphone during a mid-semester examination. The institute also said he uploaded the question paper to ChatGPT to seek answers. Officials said they did not begin disciplinary proceedings against him after the incident. Faculty members and department officials reportedly discussed the matter with him and assured him that the incident would not damage his academic career.

IIT Bombay has also removed its earlier statement supporting Professor Suryanarayana Doolla, who invigilated the examination. The institute had previously said that Doolla followed the academic procedures approved by its Senate. Students have demanded action against the professor and called for an independent investigation into Wakode’s death. The controversy intensified after Wakode’s family raised allegations concerning harassment and caste-based remarks. Authorities will determine the facts through their ongoing investigation.

Students Seek Independent Probe and Campus Reforms

Meanwhile, IIT Bombay Director Shireesh Kedare signed an 18-point charter presented by protesting students. The demands include an independent inquiry, greater transparency and stronger student participation in institutional decisions. Students have also sought an apology over what they described as the public defamation of Wakode. The charter calls for better mental-health support, stronger medical facilities and clearer rules for handling disciplinary cases. Students have additionally proposed a task force focused on student welfare and campus wellbeing.

The student charter also seeks a 24-hour psychiatrist-on-call service and an open platform for student concerns. Students want assurances that participants in the protests will not face disciplinary, hostel, financial or legal action. The administration has agreed to address the demands through the charter signed by the director. The institute has also clarified its position on the earlier statement as investigations continue. Meanwhile, students and authorities await further findings regarding the circumstances surrounding Wakode’s death.
