Approximately 40 students at Mota Munjiyasar Primary School harmed themselves after a classmate challenged them to cut their hands in exchange for money. The incident, allegedly influenced by a video game, has raised serious concerns among parents and school authorities.
According to a Gujrati Jagran report, the incident began when a seventh-grade student from Bagasara offered his classmates Rs 10 to cut their hands with a pencil sharpener blade. He further manipulated the situation by claiming that those who refused would owe him Rs 5. This led to a dangerous scenario, with dozens of children harming themselves in a misguided attempt to earn money.
The police were informed about the situation after a complaint was lodged by the village sarpanch and parents late in the evening. Bagasara Police Sub-Inspector stated that an investigation will commence when the school reopens.
Makwana, the principal of Mota Munjiyasar Primary School, expressed concern over the incident and said that the children engaged in the act while imitating a video game. He added that once the school became aware, a meeting was held with parents to address concerns and prevent similar incidents in the future. The sarpanch has since requested police action against those responsible for the negligence that allowed this incident to occur.
Officials suspect the incident at Mota Munjiyasar Primary School may be linked to an online challenge similar to the Blue Whale Challenge, infamous for self-harm cases in 2017. Amreli’s District Education Officer, Kishorbhai Mayani, confirmed an investigation is underway, involving teachers, students, and parents to uncover the cause and assess safety measures.
