Chinese drone found in Bhopal Jail, investigation underway

Authorities discovered a China-made drone inside the high-security Bhopal Central Jail, prompting them to initiate an investigation, an official reported on Thursday.

Jail superintendent Rakesh Kumar Bangre told PTI that a guard stationed near the B-block building of the prison noticed a black drone weighing between 30 to 40 grams and charged, between 3:30 pm and 4:00 pm on Wednesday.

He stated that no one witnessed the drone landing inside the jail, and preliminary observations suggest that the unmanned aerial device could belong to children who were playing with it near the prison.

Another official stated that the jail, covering 151 acres, currently holds 3,600 inmates, exceeding its capacity of 2,600.

handed over the drone to the Gandhi Nagar police

Bangre mentioned that the jail holds 69 prisoners, including 32 linked to the banned group Students’ Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), in a high-security area, among the 3,600 inmates.

He stated, “We have handed the drone over to the Gandhi Nagar police, who have initiated an investigation into the recovery of the charged China-made drone.”

Bhopal Commissioner of Police HC Mishra did not respond to requests for more information on the matter. The Bhopal Central Jail made headlines in November 2016 when eight SIMI-linked undertrials killed a prison guard and escaped. They were later shot dead by the police after opening fire on security personnel on the outskirts of Bhopal.
