Sexual Abuse, Land Grabbing Allegations Surge in Sandeshkhali Amid Leader’s Escape

For years prior to Sheikh’s escape from the scene, local women had been reporting charges of sexual assault by TMC leaders. The ladies said that TMC men harassed them and contacted them for late-night meetings masquerading as self-help group get-togethers. They declared that because Sheikh was fugitive, they were speaking up now. Allegations made at the same time that TMC members had taken agricultural land from people, many of whom were from tribal tribes, and forced it into fisheries.
