Prominent Canadian Sikh Community Leader Boota Singh Gill Assassinated

Boota Singh Gill, a well-known builder and the leader of the Guru Nanak Sikh Temple in Edmonton, Canada, passed away on Monday following numerous gunshot wounds. The tragedy happened at a building site connected to Gill’s company in the Albertan province, not far from the Millwood Recreation Centre.

Sarabjeet Singh, a civil engineer who was also shot during the event, is apparently struggling for his life, according to Maninder Singh Gill, managing director of Radio India, who spoke with reporters.

Gill Shot Dead at Construction Site

Gill stated that initial reports indicated that three people were at the building site when there was a fight. An Indian-born construction worker is accuse of shooting Gill and Singh before killing himself. Investigations are still on even though it’s unclear what started the altercation.

Officers were dispatch to the incident scene, which is locate at Cavanagh Boulevard and 30 Avenue SW, at approximately midday, according to the Edmonton Journal. A construction site for residential use revealed two bodies.

Boota Singh Gill Shot Dead Amidst Extortion Threats

Gill had previously reported to the police that she had received two to three threatening and extortion calls. An investigation has been launch by the police. There have been incidences of newly built homes being set on fire and threats to other builders in Edmonton.

Earlier this year, in a news conference, the Edmonton police said that a criminal network in India was responsible for a string of extortions directed towards home builders in the South Asian community of Edmonton.

Canadian Authorities Link Extortion and Arson to Indian Criminal Gang

A criminal group in India that employs local operators is connect to 27 incidents, including five extortions, fifteen arsons, and seven firearms offences, according to CBC News in Canada.

Six teenagers have been detained and charged in relation to these offences, said police Staff Sgt. Dave Paton. He had added that WhatsApp calls are how the group communicates.
