Court Clears Brij Bhushan Singh in Women Wrestlers’ Sexual Harassment Case

A Delhi court on Monday acquitted former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh in the sexual harassment case filed by six women wrestlers. The verdict concluded one of the most closely watched legal battles in Indian sports over the past three years. Singh consistently denied all allegations throughout the proceedings. The court’s decision brought legal relief to the former BJP MP after a lengthy trial. The case had drawn nationwide attention and sparked widespread discussions on athlete safety and accountability.

Court Ends Three-Year Legal Battle

The case originated in 2023 after six women wrestlers accused Singh of sexual harassment during his tenure as WFI president. Prominent wrestlers, including Olympian Vinesh Phogat, later emerged among the complainants while maintaining confidentiality as required by law. The allegations triggered months of protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, where top athletes demanded Singh’s arrest and removal from the federation. The demonstrations attracted international attention after police detained protesting wrestlers during a march toward Parliament. Authorities later registered FIRs, and the matter proceeded through investigation and trial.

Delhi Police filed a chargesheet in June 2023, while the court formally began trial proceedings soon afterward. During the trial, the prosecution examined 32 witnesses before concluding its evidence in May 2026. The court recorded statements from the accused, heard final arguments, and reserved its judgment before delivering the verdict. On August 3, 2026, the court acquitted Singh of all charges related to the complaints filed by the six adult wrestlers. The ruling effectively closed the criminal proceedings in the case.

Brij Bhushan Reacts to Acquittal

Following the judgment, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh welcomed the court’s decision and reiterated that he had maintained his innocence from the beginning. He expressed happiness over the verdict and thanked his supporters for standing with him throughout the legal process. Singh stated that he had always believed the truth would prevail through the judicial system. Earlier, he had also received relief in a separate case involving a minor wrestler after a Delhi court accepted the police closure report. That case ended independently before the verdict in the adult wrestlers’ matter.

Although the criminal case has concluded, the controversy significantly influenced Indian wrestling and sports governance. The wrestlers’ protests highlighted concerns regarding athlete welfare, institutional accountability, and grievance redressal mechanisms within sports federations. The movement also prompted widespread public debate about safeguarding athletes and strengthening transparency in sports administration. With the court delivering its verdict, the legal chapter has now ended, but the discussions surrounding reforms in Indian sports administration are likely to continue.
