Bhopal’s ‘Lady Singham’ Stands Firm Before Moving Bus, Says, “I Was Just Doing My Duty”

Bhopal: Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic and Crime) Monika Shukla drew widespread attention after a viral video showed her standing in front of a moving bus during a farmers’ protest in Bhopal. Protesters tried to push school buses that police had parked as additional barricades to stop their march toward the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister’s residence. The video spread rapidly across social media, where many users praised Shukla’s courage and called her Bhopal’s “Lady Singham.” Despite the public appreciation, Shukla said she had only performed her duty as a police officer. She explained that she acted quickly to stop the bus, prevent the situation from escalating, and ensure the safety of everyone present.

Shukla said police had placed school buses on the road to strengthen barricades and prevent protesters from entering the city. When demonstrators began pushing one of the buses to remove the obstruction, she immediately stepped in front of the vehicle. She made the decision on instinct because she believed stopping the bus was essential to maintaining law and order. Shukla said she never felt afraid during the incident because protecting public safety remained her highest priority. She added that her years of experience in managing protests enabled her to assess the situation quickly and respond without hesitation.

Instead of confronting the protesters, she focused on avoiding any incident that could threaten public safety. She credited her professional training and field experience for helping her remain calm and take immediate action under pressure. Citizens and senior officials praised her balanced approach and commitment to duty.

Shukla also urged police personnel to handle public demonstrations with patience and restraint. She said protesters should not be treated as criminals because they are citizens expressing their demands through democratic means. At the same time, she warned that anti-social elements sometimes join peaceful protests and attempt to create unrest. She explained that no protest leaders were present at the scene when the incident occurred, making crowd management more difficult. As the officer responsible for maintaining order, she focused on preventing violence, protecting public property, and ensuring that the large gathering did not disrupt normal life in the city.
