Bengaluru man attempts to set himself on fire near Raj Bhavan for media attention: Report

A 26-year-old man from Hebbal, Bengaluru, identified as Zuhail Ahmed, tried to set himself on fire near Raj Bhavan on Sunday afternoon in an apparent bid to attract media attention, according to the police. As reported by the Deccan Herald, the incident occurred around 4:30 pm, coinciding with a press briefing by a local politician, when Ahmed poured petrol on himself in front of gathered reporters.

Dramatic Suicide Attempt Thwarted by Media and Bystanders Near Raj Bhavan

The media quickly intervened and grabbed a plastic bottle from Ahmed before he could ignite the fuel, the report stated. Police later confirmed that he was not carrying a matchbox or lighter. Bystanders who witnessed the incident rushed to help, poured water on him, and handed him over to the authorities. The Vidhana Soudha police then booked Ahmed for causing public nuisance. While speaking to reporters, Ahmed claimed that his wife had assaulted him, which led to his hospitalization. He said he attempted self-harm to draw attention to his personal struggles, according to the Deccan Herald report.

Domestic Issues Surface in Bengaluru, Similar Tragedy in Davangere

The police revealed that Ahmed’s wife had previously filed a complaint with the Chikkaballapur police, accusing him of cruelty under IPC Section 498A. They confirmed that Ahmed works as an engineer at a private company in Hebbal, while his wife lives in Chikkaballapur. In a separate incident, a 32-year-old man in Davangere allegedly killed his two young children and died by suicide, reportedly devastated by his wife’s death. The tragic incident occurred on Thursday. The man, identified as Uday, left behind a death note in which he expressed his enduring love for his late wife and wrote that he was “joining her along with their children,” police said.
