Bangladesh Court Initiates Murder Case Against Former PM Sheikh Hasina

A murder investigation has been initiated against Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in connection with the police killing of a man during civil unrest last month. Additionally, six other prominent figures from the previous government are under investigation following weeks of violent unrest in Dhaka. Mamun Mia, a lawyer representing a private citizen, stated that the court in Dhaka has instructed the police to register “the murder case against the accused individuals”.

Bangladesh’s ex-PM Resigns and Leaves the Country Earlier This Month

Hasina resigned and left the country earlier this month, fleeing to New Delhi, India after political unrest the government. More than 400 people were killed in weeks of student demonstrations against Hasina. Many of them were shot by the police, on her orders.

Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury ordered the police to investigate the case, the first to be brought against Hasina since the protests started. The most recent student protests began in early July, starting out as peaceful demands from university students to scrap quotas in civil service jobs, before transforming into a wider movement to topple the government.

Hamza Informs Court About July 19 Incident

Businessman Amir Hamza filed to initiate the murder case in July after Abu Saeed a local grocer was shot in the head while crossing the road. Hamza informed the court that on July 19, students were participating in a peaceful protest when police opened fire indiscriminately on the crowd, as reported by BBC Bangla. He stated that although he was not related to Saeed, he took legal action because Saeed’s family lacked the financial resources to pursue the case. “I am the first ordinary citizen to have the courage to take this legal action against Sheikh Hasina for her alleged crimes. The recently formed new government contains many of the protestors, and is helmed by Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad yunus .Hasina will return to country when elections are declared, her son Sajeeb has said.
