Community shaken with shooting, search for motive and support victims

Police issued an emergency alert around 2 p.m. after the shooting began at about 1:20 p.m. local time at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. Officials asked residents to stay indoors, lock doors, and avoid public movement. Authorities lifted the shelter-in-place order nearly five hours later. Investigators are still checking whether a second attacker was involved and are confirming the total number of victims. Extra police teams arrived from nearby regions to assist local officers, and authorities closed the school for the rest of the week.

Police safely evacuated about 100 students and staff members from the building. Officers have not yet determined the motive behind the attack. Officials arranged counselling and support services for students, teachers, and residents. A Grade 9 student said he hid in a classroom closet with classmates during the shooting. The Prime Minister expressed grief over the tragedy and thanked first responders for protecting civilians.
