The Varanasi Municipal Corporation sealed the decades-old Benia Bagh Bakra Market ahead of Eid-ul-Azha after receiving complaints about overcrowding and poor sanitation. Officials said they inspected the market and found unhygienic conditions along with heavy congestion in the area. Last Friday, the civic body asked goat traders to vacate the premises within three days. However, many traders continued operating from the site even after the deadline ended.
On Monday, municipal teams reached the market with police support and cleared the premises before sealing the area. Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal said the administration cancelled permission for the temporary market after residents raised concerns about cleanliness and public inconvenience. He added that the Nagar Nigam took the step to maintain hygiene and control crowding ahead of the festive rush. The decision, however, angered many traders who said the administration acted suddenly without offering another location for business.
Varanasi Traders Oppose Sudden Closure Before Eid
Goat traders criticised the civic body and said the Benia Bagh Bakra Market has operated for nearly four decades. They described it as one of the best-known seasonal livestock markets in the region. Every year, traders from districts such as Ghazipur, Mau, Jaunpur and Gorakhpur travel to Varanasi to sell goats before Eid-ul-Azha. According to them, the market attracts thousands of buyers during the festival season and supports many small businesses.
Traders also said the closure caused serious financial problems because many sellers had already transported their animals to the city. Several traders questioned where they could sell their goats at such short notice. They argued that the administration should have improved sanitation arrangements instead of shutting down the entire market. Some traders claimed they spent large amounts on transport, fodder and temporary shelters for their livestock and now fear heavy losses before Bakrid.

Market Closure Sparks Wider Concerns
Local traders said the Benia Bagh market plays a major role in the festive economy of the region. During Eid-ul-Azha, thousands of customers visit the market to purchase goats. The seasonal business also benefits transport workers, fodder suppliers and nearby vendors. Traders believe the administration should have considered these economic factors before taking strict action during the peak festival period.
Meanwhile, civic authorities defended their decision and said public hygiene and crowd control remained their top priorities. Officials stated that residents repeatedly complained about waste disposal issues, traffic congestion and poor sanitation near the market area. The Nagar Nigam said it acted to prevent further inconvenience and maintain order before Eid-ul-Azha. Even so, the closure has triggered debate over whether authorities should have arranged an alternative site for traders before sealing a market that has operated for decades.
