Days after suggesting that India would soon halt its Russian oil trade, US President Donald Trump has now intensified his statement, claiming that India has “largely stopped” purchasing Russian oil. During a media interaction at the White House on Friday, Trump remarked, “Trade talks with India are going well, and he (Indian leader) has largely stopped buying oil from Russia. He’s a friend of mine, we talk, and he wants me to visit. We will figure it out, I’ll go…”

Trump’s latest remarks on the future of India-Russia energy ties come amid ongoing trade negotiations between New Delhi and Washington, with Russian oil being a key topic. Trump had imposed a 50% tariff on Indian imports in August, partly due to India’s energy deals with Russia. Although his tone towards India has shifted since then, he continues to insist that India must halt its Russian oil trade. The tariffs were seen as an effort to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine. After the US imposed sanctions on Moscow, India became the largest buyer of Russian crude, importing 1.7 million barrels per day in the first nine months of 2025, which accounted for 34% of its total crude imports.
Trump Claims India Has Stopped Buying Russian Oil
Trump had earlier claimed that Prime Minister Modi assured him India would soon stop buying Russian oil. He repeated this claim multiple times, but India denied any phone conversation between the two leaders. MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “I am not aware of any conversation between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump.” Trump’s latest statement marks a shift, as he now claims India has “largely” stopped purchasing Russian oil. His remarks follow US sanctions on Russian oil firms Rosneft and Lukoil, aimed at pressuring Moscow to end the war in Ukraine. India, however, said it is evaluating the impact of these sanctions and will consider global market dynamics in its decisions.
