Stock Market Holiday: NSE, BSE March 31 Closure, April List

Stock: Indian benchmark stock market indices remained closed on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, because of the scheduled holiday for Shri Mahavir Jayanti. Despite March 31 marking the final day of the financial year 2025-26, the National Stock Exchange and Bombay Stock Exchange suspended all trading operations for the day.

Mahavir Jayanti, also called Mahaveer Janma Kalyanak, is one of the most important festivals for the Jain community. The festival celebrates the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir and holds major religious significance across India. As a result, the stock market remained shut even though it was the closing day of the financial year.

The Indian equity market will resume normal trading activity on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, which will also mark the beginning of the new financial year 2026-27. Investors and traders will return to the market after a one-day pause in trading operations.

Stock Market Holiday Schedule for April 2026

Apart from the March 31 closure, investors will also witness more market holidays in April 2026. According to the official exchange calendar, Indian stock markets will remain closed again on Friday, April 3, 2026, because of Good Friday.

In addition, the exchanges will suspend trading once more on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, to observe Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Jayanti. Therefore, traders should plan their investment activity carefully because multiple market holidays could affect settlement schedules and trading volumes.

Meanwhile, the Multi-Commodity Exchange will also remain partially closed on March 31. The MCX suspended trading during the morning session between 9 am and 5 pm. However, the exchange will reopen for the evening session from 5 pm until 11:30 pm or 11:55 pm, depending on the contract category.

However, the MCX will remain fully closed on Friday because of the Good Friday holiday. Both the morning and evening trading sessions will remain unavailable on that day.

Stock Market Ends Financial Year on Weak Note

Stock market indices ended the final trading session of the financial year with heavy losses on Monday, March 30. The NIFTY50 index dropped by 2.14 percent and closed at 22,331.40 points, compared to the previous close of 22,819.60 points.

Similarly, the BSE SENSEX index declined by 2.22 percent and settled at 71,947.55 points after the trading session. In the previous session, the index had closed at 73,583.22 points.

The broader market also faced pressure throughout the financial year ending March 2026. The NIFTY50 lost more than 5 percent during the year, while the SENSEX declined by over 7 percent. Analysts believe foreign investor selling and the growing conflict in West Asia erased most of the gains recorded earlier in the year.
