Sensex, Nifty open higher as Trump delays EU tariffs

All 13 major sectors registered gains at the market open, while broader indices such as small-cap and mid-cap stocks with a more domestic focus advanced by about 0.4% each. Indian markets opened strong on Monday, buoyed by U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to delay imposing tariffs on European Union imports, easing near-term trade concerns.

Markets Open Higher on Tariffs Deadline Extension

The Nifty 50 was up 0.77% to 25,044, while the BSE Sensex traded 0.75% higher at 82,336 as of 9.30 am. All the 13 major sectors logged gains at the open. The broader, more domestically focussed small-caps and mid-caps rose about 0.4% each. On Sunday, Trump backed off his threat to slap 50% tariffs on imports from the EU, agreeing to extend his deadline for trade talks until July 9 after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the bloc needed more time to “reach a good deal.” Overall, the combination of eased trade tensions and positive domestic developments contributed to the optimistic opening of Indian markets on Monday.

Tata Motors Gains on EV Milestone; Global Markets Lifted by Tariff Delay

In corporate news, Tata Motors shares increased by 1.6%, reaching a peak of ₹729.90 on the Bombay Stock Exchange, following the tariff delay announcement. Additionally, Tata Motors’ electric vehicle (EV) segment achieved a notable milestone by posting a positive EBITDA margin for the last fiscal year, distinguishing it as one of the few global EV businesses to do so. Globally, U.S. futures surged on Monday after President Trump’s postponement of the EU tariffs, with the S&P 500 futures rising 1% and the Dow Jones futures increasing by 0.8%.
